SURVIVING THE GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS AS A CAREER PROFESSIONAL.

It’s one of Michelle Obama’s sayings that “when they go low, we go high”..

If you follow the trend in the world of business lately, you will notice that not only top economies in the world are nearing recession, even major top firms are on the verge of folding up if strict measures aren’t put in place.

Some of these measures will hurt while some won’t, some will favour and while some still won’t.

Well let’s paint a #postcovid scenario that you work for an XYZ Company somewhere on the Island who have asked majority their staffs including you to stay home for the period of the lockdown in accordance to the government order (which firm wants to go against the government at this time? None). And so after the lockdown, you resumed back to work only to be told that your service will no longer be required or that your pay will be slashed by 50% to help keep the Organisation from going down. How sad!

Like I said earlier, some of these measures won’t favour you. You should understand that.

So what do you do as a Career Professional whose bills took a major uplift over the lockdown and now struggling to go down even after the lockdown and now your only source of income is rolled back by 50%. (can this be the “pipu” from your village at work? 🙅)

Will you leave the job? An Organisation you’ve worked for for the past 13 years.. Or will you go on with your 50% salary knowing fully well it can’t cater for your average need?

PS: Remember it’s just a scenario, it may happen and as well it may not or something similar but perhaps if it does happen, what will be your decision? Think Think…

WELL MY ADVICE AS A COACH :

This lockdown period is yes a very big crisis period in the world and yes it is a perfect time for you to plan your future of work.

So what do you have to do at this time?

1. Learn a skill; most importantly that will keep you relevant even if your known skill before the lockdown becomes invalid. This is why it is very expedient you keep upgrading your skill whether or not there is crisis. It separates you from the crowd.

2. Spend this time to network with your friends in other firms and fields of experience related to yours; after all you’ve not had the time to reach out in a long time. You may need their help anytime soon, you never can tell.

3. Start looking out for other sources of income that you can run “even” with a 9–5 corporate job. You don’t have to quit your job to build other sources of income as against what you were told about Career Transition.

4. If you insist on quitting your job when your Organisation is not quitting you, you may have your personal reasons, get my Book on Career Transitioning (Before You Quit Your 9–5) on pauloyewusi.com.ng/products

The world does not change, it is the people in it that change… what part then will you play in the change?
